First up, Black Milk. I'm guessing the few of you who are actually peeping this know who this cat is, but this is an unreleased instrumental that I can not stop bumping to save my life. Big, chunky drums, a perfectly chopped soul sample...this is my shit.

Khalil is an LA dude who is affiliated with Muggs and Alchemist. I know him from his group Self Scientific with an MC called Chace Infinite who is real nice. This absolute banger is from a mixtape of strictly beats, it kind of reminds of Babu's beats- straight to the point and just dirty. Matt Rice, I'm looking in your direction on this one.

Gotta send this one out for Mikey, who put me up on this like a year ago. This cat Audible Doctor (bad name, good beats) did a Dilla tribute called Brownies utilizing only James Brown samples. I slept on this for a little while but it is nice, this is the last track and you can definitely hear that Dilla influence in the chopping of the vocal samples. That little piano loop that he rides throughout is too nice.
Now for the soul:

This is without a doubt one of the best songs I heard in 2009. I really think this song is perfect- It's paced well, the drums and the bass form a deep, funky pocket, and the way the strings build is just so tight. Put that together with some real nice backup harmonies and I just can't see anyone not digging this song. God bless.
Until next time,
Mikep
