OH SHIT

King James- Verse II

Oh my goodness. This is for the real Dilla heads, just came across this incredible mix of some of his more obscure samples, in other words just had my mind blown. Listen carefully and if you're really impatient skip to 7:00 and prepare to shit your pants. I have four more just like this one and I might just keep dropping them.

Instrumentals, and a little soul

Yes, I know, I made enormous claims regarding the work I was going to put into this project. I wooed you with my promises of limitless fire and more soul than you could shake a stick at. Well, i dropped the ball, fuck you. It may have to be every other monday (and the occasional tuesday) but rest assured if you wait it out long enough I will end up delivering. Today I'm dropping some instrumentals that I have been hiding up my sleeve, and to wrap things up, a couple soul gems.

First up, Black Milk. I'm guessing the few of you who are actually peeping this know who this cat is, but this is an unreleased instrumental that I can not stop bumping to save my life. Big, chunky drums, a perfectly chopped soul sample...this is my shit.

Khalil is an LA dude who is affiliated with Muggs and Alchemist. I know him from his group Self Scientific with an MC called Chace Infinite who is real nice. This absolute banger is from a mixtape of strictly beats, it kind of reminds of Babu's beats- straight to the point and just dirty. Matt Rice, I'm looking in your direction on this one.

Gotta send this one out for Mikey, who put me up on this like a year ago. This cat Audible Doctor (bad name, good beats) did a Dilla tribute called Brownies utilizing only James Brown samples. I slept on this for a little while but it is nice, this is the last track and you can definitely hear that Dilla influence in the chopping of the vocal samples. That little piano loop that he rides throughout is too nice.

Now for the soul:

This is without a doubt one of the best songs I heard in 2009. I really think this song is perfect- It's paced well, the drums and the bass form a deep, funky pocket, and the way the strings build is just so tight. Put that together with some real nice backup harmonies and I just can't see anyone not digging this song. God bless.

Until next time,
Mikep

the first monday

friends, this begins what i hope will be a long and lucrative musical conversation between me and you. you know who you are- you bad motherfuckers with an ear to the action who i have exchanged fire with time and time again (as in "you need to hear THIS shit!")- its time to reconnect. Particularly since leaving Burlington I have been jonesing to have an opportunity to drop jewels again, and hopefully this will inspire you to send them right back.

without further adieu:

Ethiopian samples flipped by Madlib's younger brother, this shit has been on heavy, heavy rotation for weeks now.

Perfect Reggae. Enough Said. All about the horn break at
2:00

Little bit of a change of pace but i have been bumping this shit lately, of course Premo on the beats and the cuts.

until next time
